Catawba Projected Versus Actual Release
A projected release date is the correctional system’s current estimate or scheduled sentence date. The exact public label may be “Projected Release Date,” “Maximum Release Date,” or another sentence-specific term. Record the wording that DAC displays rather than replacing it with a broader phrase. The actual release is the event entered after the person leaves that agency’s custody. A projection can move; an actual history entry records what happened.
Pretrial status is different. A bond amount or court date on the Catawba Who’s in Jail roster is not a scheduled release date. The person may post bond, receive a judicial order, remain because of another case, or transfer to another authority. For a sentenced local inmate, the Sheriff says the person knows the scheduled release day, but the exact time may vary.
Find Catawba Projected Release Dates
First identify the custody system. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction handles state prison calculations. The Catawba County Sheriff handles qualifying local jail sentences under the court commitment. A federal sentence belongs to the Bureau of Prisons, and an immigration hold belongs to ICE. Using the wrong portal can create a false “not found” result.
- For a state prisoner, open the DAC Criminal Offender Searches gateway and choose Offender Public Information.
- Search by DAC offender number when possible. Otherwise use the name, then compare identity, conviction, admission, and sentence data before selecting a match.
- Open the incarceration and sentence details. Copy the exact projected or maximum release label and note the date on which the record was checked.
- For a local sentence, call the Catawba County Detention Facility at 828-465-8999 and obtain the commitment or judgment from the Catawba Clerk.
- If a DAC date or release type is unclear, use the DAC public-record request portal. For a county custody event, contact Sheriff Records at 828-465-8300 or Records@CatawbaCountyNC.gov.
The DAC release search is for North Carolina state custody. It is not a Sheriff feed. A person who spent one night in the county jail and posted bond may never acquire a state prison release record. Conversely, a probationer can appear in DAC because the department also operates Community Supervision.
Catawba Release Uses Full Minimums
North Carolina does not use a universal rule that a prisoner serves 85 percent of a sentence. For covered felony crimes under Structured Sentencing, the judgment imposes a minimum and maximum term. Official DAC guidance says the person must serve 100 percent of the imposed minimum, with judge-awarded jail credit counted. N.C.G.S. § 15A-1340.13(d) provides that earned time may reduce the maximum but may not reduce the term below the imposed minimum except where another applicable law allows.
The companion sentencing grid in § 15A-1340.17 establishes the minimum and maximum structure. Time credited in the judgment reduces what remains to be served. Earned time can move the calculated date within the lawful space above the minimum, but it is not a fixed percentage taken off the court’s minimum. A short online calculator cannot safely reproduce the DAC computation.
This distinction is central to a Catawba County projected release date. Federal rules or another state’s shorthand should never be imported into a North Carolina record. Offense date and sentence law also matter, so the live statute and judgment should be read together.
How DAC Computes Catawba Release
The DAC calculation begins with the judgment’s minimum and maximum terms, then accounts for jail credit, sentence structure, earned time, and the statutory supervised portion. Concurrent sentences run at the same time, while consecutive sentences run one after another. An amended judgment, appellate ruling, or corrected credit can therefore change the calculation without any new misconduct.
DAC release policy also distinguishes sentence expiration, court-ordered release, parole, release to post-release supervision, return of a safekeeper to a sheriff, completion of a diagnostic stay, and other authorized movements. The destination is vital. A safekeeper returned from a DAC prison to Catawba County remains confined even though the state prison system records a release from its facility. A transfer between DAC prisons is also continued state custody. Read the release type and destination beside the date.
For covered felony terms, N.C.G.S. § 15A-1368.2 generally places release to post-release supervision at maximum less twelve months for Class B1 through E felonies and maximum less nine months for Class F through I felonies, less earned time. Qualifying registration offenses use a different special maximum and five-year supervision framework. Amendments and offense dates can alter which version applies.
That statutory date is release from prison to supervision, not necessarily final sentence discharge. The Commission sets conditions, and DAC Community Supervision administers them in the field. A result showing PRS means the person left prison at one point but still has a supervised status. The Catawba County probation and parole record explains how to verify that status.
- Minimum term
- The court-imposed period that a covered felony prisoner must serve, subject to lawful jail credit.
- Maximum term
- The sentence endpoint used with earned time and the applicable supervised portion.
- Earned time
- Credit administered under correctional rules that may reduce the maximum within statutory limits.
- Post-release supervision
- The conditional community portion of a covered state prison sentence.
Catawba Earned-Time Release Rules
N.C.G.S. § 148-13 authorizes DAC rules for custody grades, privileges, sentence credits, and forfeiture. Credits may depend on assignments and conduct. DAC notes that a work or program assignment generating credit can end because of transfer, discipline, or program completion. The projected date may then be recalculated.
No verified universal daily credit rate was found for a Catawba County jail sentence. The Sheriff does not publish a local good-time table. A local administrator must apply the commitment and governing rules to a sentenced jail term. Ask for the calculated date rather than estimating days per month. Pretrial time should be addressed through judge-awarded credit in the judgment, not assumed from the roster’s Date Confined field.
DAC’s public screen also may not show every internal computation. Basic admission, sentence, time-served, and release facts are public, while many underlying offender records are confidential. A focused records request can ask for the public calculation label and release history without seeking protected program or disciplinary detail.
Why Catawba Release Dates Change
Several events can move a projected date or change what happens when it arrives. The cause should be verified in the judgment, DAC history, or agency response. A detainer, meaning another authority’s request or hold, does not by itself prove that pickup occurred.
| Factor | Effect on the date or departure | Confirmation source |
|---|---|---|
| Earned-time gain or loss | Moves the calculation within lawful limits above the minimum. | DAC record or public response. |
| Jail-credit correction | Changes credited time already served. | Judgment and sentence calculation. |
| Concurrent or consecutive terms | Changes how multiple sentences combine. | Filed judgments and DAC sentence detail. |
| Amended order or appeal | Can revise the sentence or release authority. | Catawba court file. |
| Transfer or detainer | May change the destination without changing sentence expiration. | Releasing and receiving agencies. |
| Revocation | May return a supervised person to custody and create a new calculation. | Commission, court, and DAC history. |
Catawba Jail Release Day Timing
The Catawba jail FAQ supplies one exact local detail: a sentenced inmate knows the scheduled release day, while the exact release time may vary. It does not promise a morning release, midnight release, fixed exit door, or weekend procedure. A pickup plan should be checked with the Detention Facility at 828-465-8999 on the relevant day.
The same FAQ says a telephone is available in the lobby so the released person can contact someone. That does not create a guaranteed release hour or jail-provided transportation. The public roster does not show a projected or actual release time. For documentary proof, request the release event from Records after departure.
Property release during confinement follows a separate local rule. The FAQ allows property to be released to another person from 9:00 a.m. to noon with the incarcerated person’s signature, but says funds and clothing do not go through that third-party process. That rule should not be confused with the property returned at final discharge. Ask staff about the final-release process rather than using the third-party hours as a release-time estimate.
Confirm Catawba Actual Release
After the projected date, compare the DAC actual release history, county release entry, or receiving agency record. NC SAVAN may send a projected-release notice and a notice roughly sixty days before a state release, but “approximately” matters. Notification is not a promise of a pickup time.
DAC offers a separate Inmate Release Search with county, month, and year fields for state prison releases. A Catawba County filter refers to the DAC release record’s county field; it is not a list of people recently discharged by the Sheriff. Use it only for state correctional history and read the returned release type. A current location change can be a prison transfer, while an actual release entry may lead to PRS rather than final discharge.
For the county jail, preserve the court file number and the Sheriff release response. A court order can authorize release before physical processing finishes, and one favorable order may coexist with another warrant, bond, sentence, writ, or detainer. The court explains the legal authority. The jail records the custody departure. Comparing both timestamps prevents a projected or ordered date from being reported as the actual exit time.
Register for the matched person through the VINELink Inmate Search, then confirm the event with the facility or DAC. If VINELink reports a transfer, do not rewrite it as community release. The complete Catawba County released inmate lookup provides the wider path for jail, court, state, federal, and immigration custody.
