Catawba Correctional Release Paths
Catawba Correctional Center is operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. It is not the Catawba County Sheriff’s jail. The institution holds minimum-custody men serving state sentences and supports reentry and transitional programming. A move away from this prison can mean a transfer within DAC, work-release placement, community release under post-release supervision, discretionary parole for an eligible old-law case, or sentence expiration.
A transfer remains state custody. Work release also remains custody even when a participant works in the community. The event becomes a community release only when the state record shows the applicable release type. If post-release supervision starts, the person has left prison but has not reached final discharge. DAC Community Supervision and the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission then hold the next part of the record.

Search Catawba Correctional Releases
The DAC Offender Public Information Search is the main person-level source. Search by offender number when possible. Otherwise use name and identity controls, then match the offender number, date of birth or age, conviction, admission, and sentence information. A historical state record can remain visible after release, unlike the Sheriff’s current roster.
- Open the official DAC search and choose All when the person’s present supervision status is unknown.
- Enter the offender number or the person’s name. Use sounds-like or broader fields only when needed.
- Compare all returned identities and open the correct person record. Do not choose a result by name alone.
- Review current status, location, sentence, incarceration history, release history, and community-supervision entries.
- Record the exact date label and release type. A projected date is not an actual release event.
- If the result remains unclear, use the DAC public-record request portal for the basic admission, sentence, release, and supervision facts.
A Catawba Correctional Center location change is not release proof. Confirm an actual release entry and check whether a later return or active supervision appears.
The separate DAC Inmate Release Search can filter state releases by county, month, year, or surname. Its Catawba filter refers to the state database’s release county. It is not a feed of departures from the Catawba County Detention Facility.

The facility can answer current operational questions, but documentary state offender requests belong with DAC. Ask the prison to confirm the correct division or current status channel rather than requesting confidential institutional material. DAC says basic conviction, time served, sentence length, admission, and release dates are public, while most other offender records are confidential.

Use the DAC Public Records page and its request portal for a written record. Include the full name and offender number, identify the date or sentence at issue, and ask for the precise public fields needed. Medical, security, personnel, and much of the broader institutional file will not become public merely because the person was released.

Catawba State Release Dates
North Carolina Structured Sentencing does not use a universal rule that a person serves 85 percent. For covered felony crimes, the judgment contains a minimum and maximum term. DAC Victim Support explains that the person must serve 100 percent of the imposed minimum, with judge-awarded jail credit counted. Earned time may reduce the maximum within legal limits but cannot simply cut the imposed minimum by a fixed percentage.
Under § 15A-1368.2, release to post-release supervision is built into the sentence structure for covered felonies. Offense class, registration duties, earned time, and the law in effect matter. A displayed projected date can change after discipline, program changes, sentence correction, jail-credit review, appellate action, aggregation of sentences, or revocation.
The correct sequence is to read the exact DAC label, treat it as projected when the system says projected, and then confirm the actual event after that date through release history. Catawba Post-Release Supervision
A person can be physically released from Catawba Correctional Center and still appear as an Active Probationer/Parolee in DAC. Post-release supervision is the statutory supervised part of a covered prison sentence. Parole is conditional release under parole law, primarily for eligible older cases. Probation is imposed by a court and can exist without a state prison admission.
Search All in OPI when it is unclear whether supervision continues. Then inspect the exact status and community-supervision data. Catawba is served within DAC Community Supervision Judicial District 25. A violation or absconding can lead to return to prison. That later status does not erase the historical release event, but it changes the current answer. Always read the newest record as well as the release history.
Catawba Reentry Release Programs
Catawba Correctional Center is officially identified as a minimum-custody reentry prison. Its transitional and work-release programming can place a person close to community activity while the person remains in DAC custody. A work-release participant is not finally discharged merely because assigned work occurs outside the prison. Current DAC status and the facility remain the correct custody sources until an actual release entry appears.
Reentry preparation and legal release are therefore separate milestones. Program completion can affect a person’s transition plan, but the sentence structure, earned time, court action, parole authority, or post-release supervision law controls departure. After release, an Active Probationer/Parolee status may show continuing state authority. A later supervision termination is a different event from the prison gate release.
For each transition, record the exact DAC status, location, and release-history label. A transfer, work-release assignment, prison release, supervision start, and supervision discharge are separate events. Keeping them separate prevents a program date from being mistaken for the day state custody ended.
Catawba Federal Release Distinctions
Federal or immigration language found on the Catawba County jail roster does not describe custody at Catawba Correctional Center. This prison is a North Carolina DAC institution. If a state prisoner has a detainer from another authority, the state release date can remain valid even though the person does not return directly to the community. The receiving agency and destination must be confirmed from the actual state release record.
For a later federal prison event, the BOP locator is the correct federal source. U.S. Marshals pretrial detention has no comparable national public locator, while ICE uses its own detainee locator. None of those systems should replace DAC OPI for the state sentence. Catawba Prison Release History
DAC reports that Catawba Correctional Center dates to 1932 and has a published capacity of 246. Those figures describe the institution, not annual releases. They should not be used to estimate how many people leave custody.
The city also contains the much larger Catawba County Detention Facility. That Sheriff jail and this DAC prison use separate searches, contacts, sentence structures, and release records. A person may pass from the county jail into state custody, but the county release time is not the same as DAC admission or later prison release.
The distinction prevents a common error. The county’s live Who’s in Jail page cannot show whether a person remains at Catawba Correctional Center. DAC OPI cannot document a brief county stay that never entered state prison or supervision records. Choose the system that controlled the event, then preserve its exact status and date labels.
